Driving to work today, I saw many a kid standing on the corner looking like someone had snatched their youth. Then, traffic was bumper to bumper and I realized that today was the first day back to school. Woot, woot. Which doesn’t really impact me but now that the kids are back in school maybe there will be less vandalism in the parks, just sayin’. But honestly, what is the point of burning down a port-a-potty?! Anyway, if you, like me do not have to go to bed early because you are in the prime of your adulthood – here are some movies to enjoy on this first day back to school!
We’ll kick it off with a classic, five kids from vastly different social circles find themselves in Saturday detention. They band together to combat the tyrannical principal and discover that they aren’t so different after all. It’s a coming of age story that touches on a lot of gritty truths about high school with a fantastic soundtrack and cast.
Having grown up in a very rural community, this movie resonated with me. I’m not totally sure what the point of the movie was and that’s what made it so perfect. It was just a group of really odd kids trying to find their niche.
Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, a ginger Shannen Doherty, shoulder pads, feathered-hair and a plot to off the cool kids. Known for a whole lotta’ f-bombs and the birth of, What’s your damage, it’s a classic if albeit a little hard to get through in my old age.
This movie is such a tragedy, it touches on a lot of the pressure that kids are under from their parents, coaches and sports obsessed communities.
This film is based on actual undercover reporting at a San Diego area high school and I think that’s why the over-the-top antics ring pretty true for an all-American public high school experience. Sean Penn is by far my favourite part of this movie but you’ll see loads of familiar fresh faces.
I will admit that this movie is a tad problematic, the whole you can be hot and smart story line is a little done but didn’t we all secretly love that she got into Harvard Law with a bikini video and got to rub in her snooty ex-boyfriend’s face? That Raquel Welch cameo *swoon*
I feel like I learned all of my life lessons from 80’s teen movies. This film focuses on how differences in socioeconomic backgrounds can impact the relationships that we have with our peers, sometimes we can overcome them and sometimes we can’t. It’s a very adult theme that is still extremely relevant today, especially in the era of excess where extravagance is constantly on display.
The movie that reminds us why teachers are so special and that the best stories are true.
Another quirky Witherspoon role, I loved the teacher/student power struggle and we all kinda’ related to being kept down by the man 😀 I have to say that I am a little miffed that we didn’t have elections for Student Council, everyone was just appointed – how lame is that?
I’m also still peeved off that I didn’t get to attend Hogwarts. I loved the original set, I didn’t like how it got darker and colder as the series went on but I get why the subtle changes were made. This movie came out in November of my freshman year and I remember going to see it after school and tend to associate it with fall/going back to school.
How was your first day back to school?
