New Year, New Content?

Ah yes, with the ringing in of the New Year comes the commitment to live a renewed existence – 2019 is the year that we get fitter, smarter, stronger, healthier, more educated and dominate the world (just like the last 31 years). In all seriousness, there is something refreshing about the start of bright, shiny year that does make me want to make some kind of a change but I just can’t put my finger on what it is specifically. When I started this blog, it was strictly all things makeup and beauty, I soon realized that I had pigeon holed myself into a niche that didn’t totally define me. I love makeup, I have no problem admitting that, the whole ritual of makeup is simply delicious to me and I’m not knocking my love or anyone else’s love for makeup but I felt the need to expand my content. So I started blogging about books, movies, television, home decor, my minimalist journey, recipes and a bit of clothing but my content is still heavily beauty/makeup/skincare saturated. The thing is, those posts perform better than all of the other content that I post and I’m starting to wonder if I should just go back to the more focused content? I’m kind of at the point where I feel like it would be better to do one thing really well rather than many things all a bit mediocre. Obviously, this is just a hobby for me, it’s a stress reliever, it’s a way to squeeze a little creativity into my very structured life. It’s not about followers and numbers but I do want to post content that people enjoy and can relate to. January will be a bit of a mash-up since I plan to share some of the details about my Veganuary (in the least preachy way possible), I have a birthday haul to post that does include some clothing and I have new books to read that I received for Christmas so no huge content changes there. Apparently this title is purely clickbait πŸ˜› But I’m curious to know if other bloggers have experienced this malaise with content and feeling like they want to change what they write about? It seems so easy to just go back to all beauty but I recently did a huge clear out and was peeved off at how many products were expired which is totally my own fault because I just have more product than I can use! I’m kind of at a point that I just know what products I like and I’m not itching to go out and purchase the newest foundation or powder or blusher when I have ones that I love. I’m definitely interested in clean beauty, I’m also turning 32 so I should probably get one of those jade rollers and a retinol πŸ˜€ I do have the new Drunk Elephant retinol on my wishlist, I’ll report back if I pick it up.

Anyway, I’d love to hear what content you enjoy reading! Do you prefer following more specialized blogs or enjoy more lifestyle content? I personally enjoy just reading about people’s lives and everyday activities but generally, other people’s lives are usually more interesting than mine. I hope that you are having a beautiful first day of 2019, we have a new inch of crisp white snow and the sun is shining here, a perfect January day πŸ™‚

When I first started my blog it was mainly about beauty & it got really boring so I expanded to books & lifestyle. I like blogs that are a mix (beauty, fashion, books, recipes, lifestyle, etc) so I think you should continue having a mix of posts on your blog if you enjoy writing them!

Thanks for the feedback!! It’s definitely helpful to know that you felt the need to expand as well ☺️ I love writing all kinds of posts, I enjoy variety too. I appreciate your thoughts, thanks for reading 😘

Found this so interesting! I’ve been trying to figure out what content is best for my blog too! I also found that writing about similar topics became repetitive and boring. Since I write my blog for fun I’m now trying to focus on writing posts that I enjoy writing! I usually find a variety of topics on blogs great! πŸ™‚

I’m glad ☺️ It’s a conundrum, you start a blog with a plan and so many intentions and then hit a road block!! I feel the same though, I definitely prefer a variety of topics because it can feel monotonous blogging about the same topics even if it is something you love. Thanks for the feedback 😘

I don’t really have a preference – I find that if I genuinely like the person’s tastes, their lifestyle and their personality, I will invest in a lot of the content they write as long as they are true to themselves. I really like makeup but I’m afraid that I don’t profess to love it as much as a lot of makeup lovers. However, I try to talk about makeup in my own way which tends to be when I use it sparingly as I like to have a natural finish – that type of thing. Skincare however is definitely more my thing so I talk more about that. The point is, as long as you talk about things you love rather than what is trendy/popular, I don’t think you can go wrong.

That’s a good point, I tend to enjoy the content more if I’m similarly minded to the author as well. Makeup is very personal, I’m always surprised that the beauty gurus are so popular because every person will have a different experience with the same product. I’m getting more into skincare as I get older but I still obsess over makeup 😜 Thanks for the feedback, I hope to keep writing what I enjoy 😘

I have definitely been through this phase several times on my blog and now youtube. I know having a niche is good but I also think it’s good to refresh your content and share your other creative sides. Let your supporters get to know you in different ways. And things change all the time, I think it would be boring to keep doing the same thing over and over again. I also don’t follow the same content or one specific niche, I like a variety so enjoy both lifestyle and niche accounts. I hope you figure things out and put out what you love.❀️

I totally agree! Blogging about the same content, while I enjoyed it, did start to feel stale and boring. I prefer writing about a variety of things so it is good to know that readers enjoy that! I think it will come together, thanks for reading πŸ™‚

can’t wait to hear more about veganuary! i don’t have much of a preference between a variety of content vs. more niche, as long as you’re writing about things you love πŸ’› cheers to the new year!

It’s going good so far, I think I will post a round up of new recipes that I have tried so far this week over the weekend! I agree, I think it’s important to blog about things that one loves πŸ™‚ Thanks for your feedback, I hope to get back to a rhythm soon!

I’m having the same issue deciding what to post! My beauty posts and travel posts outperform everything else (and my one post that was both beauty and travel did the best last year) but I love posting about a range of stuff. My current plan is to try to make my blog 75% beauty, 25% everything else. I will say, blogging more about my life makes me pick more exciting stuff to do than stay home and Netflix all day because I then need something to write about LOL.

    • quitesimplystella

I’m glad I am not the only one but it can definitely be frustrating. I want to post content that people enjoy and the best way to gauge that is through views/likes/ follows so it’s tricky to blog for myself and others. That’s a great idea to have a ratio to work around, I think I might steal that!!

Same – blogging definitely keeps me motivated to try new stuff even outside of beauty πŸ™‚ I enjoy the variety of posts that you have, I think you’ve got a good rhythm down!

  • Hunida

Eeee! I’m so excited for Veganuary, your birthday haul, & seeing which new books you got. πŸ™‚

I personally love a variety blog over one with a niche but, you should do whatever makes you happier. πŸ™‚

    • quitesimplystella

Yes!! I’ve got to get a post together for Veganuary. Once all of my orders arrive, I’ll be sure to post 😘

I like the variety, I think I’m going to stick with it for at least a bit longer!! Good to hear what others think, thanks for the feedback 😊
