900 Followers & Ramblings

I am doing this clean eating thing, well I have been for awhile because it is super easy to work around all of my food allergies when cooking clean. Clean eating isn’t really anything fancy, and according to Good Housekeeping it is bullshit and elitist. (Hilarious to me that a magazine that was founded on providing housekeeping tips to middle-class, post war housewives who were domestically helpless due to having lost their paid staff actually has the audacity to label anything elitist but I digress). I have been enjoying it more recently as so many veggies are in season and I can add new ingredients. In the winter, I use a lot of frozen veggies which might be cheating but still tastes good! Also, the recipes are so easy as you are really just tossing a lot of whole foods together and I love the combos. Pinterest is a cornucopia of clean eating recipes and meal plans if you are curious. I find that clean eating gives me more energy and better skin, among other benefits plus the dishes are always pretty and colourful (and they taste good too). At any rate, more on this later. I just finished reading The Perfect Stranger by Megan Miranda – it was way better than I was expecting! I picked it up on a whim and was not disappointed, it is a thriller that centers around the disappearance of a girl who doesn’t really exist in the traditional sense of the word – definitely recommend for a fun, fast-paced, summer thriller.

Anyway, I think it is safe to say that I have reached 900 followers – I remove all of the blogs that I think are spam accounts so that I can get an accurate count of people who I actually think read my content. I don’t understand spam accounts, I mean – what is the point? I am super excited about this milestone, especially since I was such a flake when I started this blog 😦 I had good intentions but isn’t that always the way? I didn’t blog for literally years but have almost an entire year streak of posting everyday! I so appreciate everyone who reads my blog and likes my content and even comments – I so enjoy being a part of this community!

Being optimistic, I would like to start planning a 1,000 follower gift-away which is a giveaway but I always say that I am going to gift away stuff so might as well stick with the theme 🙂 I am planning a Fall Beauty Edit post as we are fast approaching my favourite season and I have loads to talk about. I plan to gift away the items that are mentioned in said post pending they can be boxed up and shipped! I will try to include some life style items as well since I know that not everyone who follows me is here for the makeup. I’d like to open this to international followers, I just don’t know what the logistics of that would be so more to come. I won’t start promoting the gift-away until I hit 1,000 as I don’t want to count my chickens before they hatch 🙂 I don’t know what else to do to celebrate, I love reading Q&A’s but I also hate talking about myself so there’s that. Lots of bloggers talk about going self-hosted but I like the WordPress platform. I think it is easy to use and I already pay for the premium service, I don’t really get what being self hosted would change for my blog. I would appreciate any thoughts around this though. If you have any ideas on how to celebrate, let me know!!

Wednesday Reveal – June Birchbox

Birchbox is quickly becoming my least favourite subscription box, I feel that they send out a lot of the same brands and similar products. This will be my 7th box and the variety is so lacking in comparison to other subscriptions that I really enjoy. This could be the last box that I do from them, or July will be since I already paid for it. We will see if they redeem themselves in July.

The theme for the month was Face the Day and here is what came in my box:

amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo – I think this is at least the 4th product that I have received from this brand and I don’t love this brand. I am not generally picky about my hair care but this brand tends to tangle and dry it out. This shampoo claims to strengthen, repair and enhance your hair with each use. In all honesty, I don’t get dry shampoo and it doesn’t get me, I will gift this away. I have enough amika products to make a pamper gift basket 😛

Smashbox Photo Finish Primer – I love this primer and don’t mind having a mini for multi-priming. I read a review about Ipsy and they got 2 stars for sending too many primers – is there even such a thing?

Marcelle Hydra-C 24H Energizing Hydrating Gel – I love gel moisturizers and will definitely give this a go. It contains green tea, cucumber and vitamins C and E – sounds lovely.

COOLA Rosilliance Organic BB Cream – This product sounds very interesting, it is a sunscreen hybrid that is supposed to warm your complexion up rather than give it that white sunscreen cast. This brand tends to really irritate my skin though and this will be a gift away.

Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash – Ah, Stabby Lash, so we meet again. I don’t even know if I like this mascara or not because I just stab myself and give up! Another gift away, I have a gal pal who loves this.

That’s it! Not terrible, only 2 of the 5 will I actually try so not the best. We will see what July brings, thanks for stopping by ❤

Sephora Brush Set

I keep trying to convince myself that I am one of those people who can keep a planner but I am slowly giving up on this 😛 Instead of writing things down that I want to do, I just want to do them. I am not a planner, I am not disorganized but I once had someone tell me that I am less concerned about the journey than the destination. I guess that makes sense – I am not impatient but I do just kinda’ wanna’ get there. Wherever there is, in this case – to the grocery store and laundry room. It isn’t like I am planning anything exciting, anyway – Target has the cutest odds and ends for projects of this nature and I was going to share a planner haul and I realized that I just bought 10 rolls of washi-tape for colour coding. Which sums up how these projects go, I don’t know what I am doing or planning – but it needs colour coding.

Instead I have a cute, little brush set from Sephora that I picked up recently. I wanted a set of travel sized, synthetic brushes to throw in my bag that wouldn’t be fussy to wash, wouldn’t be spendy enough to worry about them being squished and would be little enough that they probably wouldn’t get smooshed anyway. The Ready in 5 Brush Set checks all those boxes and it’s affordable. These are Sephora brand brushes, I generally have pretty good luck with their brushes. They aren’t the best quality but the bristles are soft, not flimsy and they hold up well with multiple washings. These smaller brushes are of the same decent quality, they are very light weight as the handles are plastic but they don’t feel cheap. I like the ombre colour scheme too and they come with a handy travel case that protects the bristles from getting bent. The smudger and angled eye brushes are probably my favs of the bunch, I have been using these on the regular but I do enjoy them all. Not a bad set for $20 if you need some low maintenance, everyday brushes!

Everything that you need to create a total eye-look is included and so far I have been loving them!

July Wishlist

Sometimes I will look over and my Baby Cat will be in the throws of an existential crisis. It must be hard being a cat, not working, having food served to you and someone else cleaning up your poop 😛 Do you ever wonder what cats think about? Is that just me, that’s cool.

A new month calls for a new lust list, I think! Here is what I am coveting for July:

beautyblender Summer Fling Set – This isn’t so much a want as it is a need, my collection of sponges is pretty depressing. Most of them are missing bits and my baking sponge is oddly stiff. I mean, three full-sized BB’s for $49 is a deal! My favourites are the black sponges but these will do.

Bite Beauty Susanne’s Favorites Kit – Yup, I am itching to try more of the Amuse Bouche lippies. This set includes; Honeycomb, Gazpacho and Jam – I like that this kit includes a bold red, everyday nude and vampy purple.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Moon Jelly Lip Gloss – I won’t lie, even though I am not a gloss gal I keep seeing this in makeup tutorials and it is too freaking gorgeous. It’s just a clear, shimmer gloss but it looks so gorgeous.

The next item is a YouTube Made Me Buy It item, Kathleen Lights included this palette from Sonia Kashuk  in her June favourites and the swatches looked gorgeous on her channel. The Pretty Cheeky Palette includes a blush, bronzer and highlight in this stunning package for 19.99. I know that it is limited edition but I feel less like a jerk spending my cash at the drugstore on a brand that isn’t crazy hyped.

Random want/need is a new cross-body bag, a ketchup burst in my bag (I hoard extra condiments) and totally ruined the lining and now my bag reeks of vinegar. It also coated my drivers license which looks super gross. I think this one from LaGaksta has that two-tone, goes with everything feel and it is the size I like but this one is real leather. At least this gives me an idea of the style that I want and am sure that I can find either a synthetic or vegan leather alternative:

I also have a ColourPop single shadow palette that I am putting together but I will spare you 😛 I really think that’s it, nothing has been catching my eye lately and I just did my Sephora mega haul so that I could use up a coupon, I feel a little shopped out. But who knows, STILA randomly just released a stick foundation, I might have to check that out!

What are you coveting this month? Thanks for stopping by ❤

Glossier – Hot or Not

I don’t think that I have ever done a post like this…? Mostly because I cannot think of another brand that I have tried almost everything from. Brands are just releasing so many products now days, I think that this will probably remain the case. Ever since I read an Into The Gloss article about the beauty editor found Glossier, I was intrigued and wanted to try everything which I eventually have except for their lip gloss! I feel that I have developed a fairly good feel for the brand and might be a reliable source of information. I would be a terrible sales person 😛 These opinions are just my own experiences with these products, I of course only have 1 skin type and 1 complexion to work with 🙂 Let’s get to it:

OG Priming Moisturizer – Hot! I love this product, it is lightweight and you can apply as little or as much as you need to feel hydrated. I have used this product with and without primer, I like it both ways but if you want the staying power that primer gives you then obviously add it. It doesn’t clog pores, doesn’t break up my makeup and doesn’t get oily. It’s just a nice, balanced, everyday moisturizer.

Priming Moisturizer Rich – Not. I just don’t love this stuff enough to merit a repurchase at $35. There isn’t anything in it that makes me feel it should cost that much, sorry. It is formulated with ceramides, algae, fatty acids, murumuru butter and lavender. It does feel nice but not much outside of that. This also tends to break me out and the lavender stings my face a bit. I should have known the last bit but when a product claims to be suitable for all skin types, I have to give it a whirl.

Soothing Face Mist – Warm? Can I cheat? Here is the deal, this face mist is rosewater, aloe and glycerin – nothing else. It retails at $18 for 4 ounces, certainly not the most expensive mist that I have tried but Mario Badescu does almost the exact same mist that retails at $12 for 8 ounces. There just isn’t anything terribly special about this spray and between the two, the Glossier actually smells more artificial. If you don’t want any dyes in your face mist then you are probably willing to pay more, I prefer the Mario Badescu and get the same results but this is still a nice product.

The Supers – Not. These are three different skin care products that treat different skin concerns. Super Bounce is a combination of hyaluronic acid and B5 that is supposed to plump, hydrate and soften. Super Glow is a Vitamin C and Magnesium concoction that is supposed to treat dull skin. And Super Pure is Niacinamide and Zinc to balance, purify and smooth. The first time that I used these, I loved them but stopped seeing results when I purchased a second round. It kinda’ just felt like I was putting water on my face plus the price is outrageous – .5 ounces for $28 each! Cute packaging but overall ineffective and not worth it!

Mega Greens Galaxy Pack – Hot! This is one of my favourite masks when my skin is misbehaving. It is formulated with white clay, avocado oil, aloe, bitter orange peel and other good skin stuff. I use this mask as a spot treatment, as an all over treatment – it isn’t too drying but my skin definitely feels purified.

Moisturizing Moon Mask – Hot! This mask has so many yummy ingredients; licorice root, lemon extract, hyaluronic acid, honey and aloe! It just sounds refreshing, this banishes dry spots and my skin looks glow-y and hydrated every time I use this.

Milky Jelly Cleanser – Hot! This cleanser is so mild but removes every molecule of makeup and it can be used on eye makeup without burning my eyes! It doesn’t strip the skin, you get a hydrated, balanced and purified complexion. I also feel that this is one of their more affordable products at $18 for 6 ounces.

Invisible Shield SPF 35 – Could be hotter. This product is a gel that you can wear under makeup but over moisturizer so it took some getting used to and remembering to put it on. It is lightweight, doesn’t smell like sunscreen and wears well under makeup. It does what it should, SPF 35 is not a ton so points off there. Also, the tube is dinky – 1 ounce for $34. This didn’t break me out and I was excited to use on my chest which is prone to break outs from sunscreen but then I was using twice as much product! Super cute packaging, love the smell, like the overall concept but I can find a cheaper product that probably also moisturizes. This also isn’t a clean product so you are really paying more for no real reason, you can find better.

Balm Dotcom – Hot! I love this product, it is thicker than most balms but I wear it during the day, at night – it just feels so great on. There is a flavour for everyone, the only two that I don’t like are cherry and mint. Cherry because it smells so artificial and mint because it is so gritty.

Cloud Paint – So not. I loathe it, read more here. If you have flawless skin and don’t need a lot of foundation – this product is probably perfect for you! It just smeared my base and broke up over the day.

Haloscope – Hot! I own Quartz and Moonstone, these are really gorgeous for adding a little dewiness and glow. I apply under my foundation, on brow bones, cupid’s bow – etc. They aren’t sparkly and they meld so well with makeup giving a natural glow. If I can get any semblance of a tan or flush this summer, I might try Topaz which is the bronzier shade.

Boy Brow – Hot! This is a gel formula that is more flexible than potted brow pomades but provides a lot of hold and fluffs up the brows for those coveted, thick, face framing brows.

Generation G – Hot! I like the stain effect that these lippies provide and they feel really nice on the lips. These can be easily built up for more colour and they fade evenly leaving just a hint of pigment. I definitely enjoy these!

Stretch Concealer – Hot! This is a wax formula that doesn’t feel heavy or cakey, it sinks into the skin. It provides medium coverage in my opinion, on the days that I don’t need a lot of coverage – this is perfect! The only thing that I am not crazy about is that it is formulated with cocoa butter that can break me out.

Perfecting Skin Tint – So not. You need perfect skin for this to do anything. I wasn’t able to build for more coverage, at the end of the day it just pooled into weird spots and looked greasy. I don’t even think there really needs to be different shades, I could probably wear any shade and get the same results as it is just so sheer. I wear tinted moisturizers and BB’s that offer plenty of coverage, this did nothing. Also, you cannot use it with a beauty blender – all of the product soaks up. I tried to pat in with my fingers and just could not get an even application – not a fan.

That’s it for everything that I have tried from Glossier! I might try the lip gloss at a future date, I just don’t wear a ton of gloss so haven’t really looked twice at it. Another cool thing about this brand, their products ship with these handy pink, bubble envelopes – I reuse these for travelling, packing and storing makeup. Also, they send you sticker swag! I am a fan of the brand, I think they should send me a sweatshirt – geez.

I’d love to hear what you have tried or have been wanting to try! Thanks for stopping by ❤

Sample Saturday – Bite Beauty

Being anti-social is apparently a personality disorder – when did this happen?! An article was forwarded to me (as a joke…) and even though I say that I am anti-social I am not this! I just don’t enjoy the company of most people, it makes me uncomfortable. I don’t enjoy disingenuous interactions, I don’t want or need to be asked How I amby people who don’t care and are just trying to be polite. I will walk into the lunch room and if I feel that there are too many people in it for me to enjoy my lunch, I will walk right out – life is too short to not live it in a way that makes you feel happy and content. Think of all the time and energy that is wasted on meaningless interactions when that energy could be applied to something else, to something more impactful. Silence isn’t awkward to me, forced and useless chit-chat is awkward and nerve-wracking. I sometimes enjoy human interaction, I like having discussions, I love the sharing of ideas, debate, like minded individuals getting together to talk about things we love (why else would I blog) but day to day social niceties just exhaust me. Apparently though, I better stop saying that I am anti-social because it reads borderline sociopathic. Can I be selectively anti-social? That doesn’t sound so bad 😀 But then I suppose that one could also be selectively sociopathic – meek!

We’re going off the rails here, the sample that I have for this Saturday did not come in a box – I cashed in some points for this little beauty from Bite BeautyI had not tried this brand before, the only info that that I think I knew about them was that the lippies are handmade in small batches in Canada, the brand is a heavy hitter in the clean beauty circle, and the lippies are seemingly edible being formulated with clean ingredients that are good enough to eat. I can’t lie though, reading these ingredients – I wouldn’t eat it…plus they are $26 a pop and I cannot afford to eat it.

I received the Amuse Bouche in Beetroot which is a rich, berry red with what I feel are blue undertones. I love the chic, matte grey bullet and understated branding. The whole aesthetic is very minimal and fits with the overall natural, clean vibe that this brand is known for. The lipstick is slightly citrus flavoured with grapefruit, lemon, lime, tangelo, mint and mandarin extracts. It is a really faint scent, nothing overwhelming and nothing that made me want to eat it. The actual product is very soft in comparison to other bullets that I have tried, you do get a lot of pigment from one layer. It slips on the lips more than I’d like but nothing unwearable, I liked the moisture, the cream finish and pigment. I love the colour too, perhaps not one that I would have thought of purchasing but will definitely use the sample. I only wore it for 6 hours with no eating and it did transfer a bit to my cup. Otherwise, it wore well and is very lovely! There are 34 shades and I would definitely try more! You can find the entire line at Sephora!

Product of the Week – Caudalie

Update – I am smitten with the tarte Clay Stick foundation. I have been wearing it for the last couple of days and the shade turned out to be perfect. The consistency is so creamy and blendable, it is not full-coverage but it does a wonderful job of enhancing the skin and covering most issues. I was a little hesitant but it turned out really lovely!

Anyway, the product of the week this week is grape water – not just any grape water though – $18 grape water in a can by Caudalie. This is not something that I would typically purchase because I don’t need extra moisture on my face most of the time, but seeing as how I apparently have dry skin now this product has been an everyday addition to my beauty routine. This mist is 98% grape water and 2% grape juice, it claims to instantly soothe dryness, dullness, uneven texture and redness – I don’t disagree. I cannot attest to the claims that this product increases moisture by 127% but it does keep my skin hydrated. It also takes away any powdery appearance from my makeup and refreshes my look towards the end of the day if I am looking a little blah. Apparently, this can be used to dampen your beauty blender for foundation blending but this seems a tad extra 😀 The mister is so fine, I love it – it doesn’t spit or drip on my base and I wish that all sprays came in a can!

Does anyone need this? No, definitely not. In fact, while I was perusing the skincare section at the time that I purchased this, the BF said that of course companies cannot sell us products that actually work because then they would not be able to sell us new stuff all of the time. He also reminded me that while he smokes, doesn’t use moisturizer and has zero lip lines, I have never smoked, use gallons of moisturizers/serums (since I have been pretty young) and do have lip lines. He is such a delight to shop with, let me know if you need someone to talk you out of buying anything, ever and want to borrow him 😛 I mean, it’s all very X-Files but he isn’t wrong. I just hate that my skin looks and feels so dry, it is uncomfortable to smile! This mist definitely helps and does just what it claims to do – that’s why it is the product of the week! There is a smaller size and in all honesty, this isn’t that expensive in comparison to other face mists – the big can is 6.7 ounces. I recommend if you have dry skin that needs a pick me up during the day or have sensitive skin, this is amazing for heat rash.
