    Friday the 13th Facts!

I am a fan of Friday the 13th, I feel like it’s a little taste of Halloween throughout the year. I especially enjoy it when it falls in October but it can be a stressful day for some. My mom was not a fan of the day, she would cancel appointments and stay home, it was bizarre. I don’t think that there is anything particularly special or unique about the day and most of the hysteria can more than likely be attributed to pop-culture. That being said, we are currently experiencing a torrential downpour that is supposed to turn into a record setting blizzard so it feels a little ominous.…

31 Nights of Horror – Halloween

Ah yes, the coupe de grace, the final reckoning, the piece de resistance – John Carpenter’s 1978/81 slasher flicks, Halloween Parts I and II. 6-year-old Michael Myers murders his sister and is committed to a psychiatric hospital. Fifteen years late on Halloween Eve, Michael escapes and makes his way back home to Haddonfield, Illinois to give the locals a Samhain that they will never forget. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) drops a key off at the Michael’s childhood home provoking his stalking her for the remainder of the day. She sees him while walking home with her two friends, Annie and Lynda but they convince her that is’t nothing to worry about. Meanwhile, Dr.…

31 Nights of Horror – Hellraiser

This movie is absolutely disgusting but definitely a must see for any horror junkie. Clive Barker’s body horror from 1987 brings to life all of my childhood fears of the beings that inhabit the depths of Hell. Frank Cotton purchases a puzzle box knowing that if solved, would open a gate to another dimension filled with unimaginable horrors and carnality. He is a total sleazebag who has exhausted the pleasures of the flesh that are available to him in the mortal realm and is seeking something more. Frank solves the box and dies shortly after in an attic that looks like a drug den. Cut to the living, Larry (Frank’s…

31 Nights of Horror – The Hitcher

This movie is relentless and kinda’ hard to watch as it just goes on and on with no end in sight. Jim Halsey is on a cross-country trek to San Diego when he picks up a hitchhiker in a torrential downpour. The hitcher, John Ryder, isn’t the friendliest guy and starts to say odd things and claims that he killed the driver of an abandoned car that they pass. Jim starts to worry that he has made a mistake and takes the opportunity to shove John out of the car. It seems as though Jim has dodged a bullet but he is soon overtaken by a car with a family…

31 Nights of Horror – Fright Night

This classic 1985 vampire thriller is about Charley Brewster, a typical teenager who is certain that his new neighbor is a vampire and responsible for the deaths of at least three young women after seeing him and another man hauling a coffin through their back yard. Charley tries to tell his mom and the police what happened but they assume that he is nuts and even confront Jerry (vampire neighbor) and his roommate Billy which leads the authorities to even further disbelieve Charley’s story. Charley, out of desperation seeks out a former vampire hunter and star of Fright Night, one of his favourite televisions shows but is ultimately rebuffed when not even Peter Vincent…

31 Nights of Horror – Grimm

This series is probably my ultimate guilty pleasure, I admit that it is ultra-cheesy but I still love it. Detective Nick Burkhart finds out that he is descended from a long line of grimms and that all those fairy tales were real. His ancestors fought to eradicate wesen ie, the big bad wolf, the three bears, dragons, ogres. He teams up with Monroe, who is also a blutbad (big bad wolf) to keep the wesen of Portland at bay and is able to solve cases that would otherwise go unsolved because he can see the creatures for what they really are. I enjoy the modern day, retelling of some old…

31 Nights of Horror – Sleepy Hollow

Confession, I had never watched this movie until just this last weekend and wasn’t going to include it on the list. Unpopular opinion, I am not a fan of Johnny Depp. I don’t know why, he seems like a good actor but I’d watch pretty much any other actor in a movie over him, including Jake Gylenhaall. Yikes. That being said, this movie was all around enjoyable and definitely a new fav! It’s your traditional Ichabod Crane tale but with a bit of twist, in this film Crane is a police constable who is sent to investigate several slayings in Sleepy Hollow where the victims had been beheaded. Depp plays…

31 Nights of Horror – Phantasm

I won’t lie, this movie is a little light on plot but it is still a classic in my book – if only for that creepy, organ music riff.  Jody and Mike are two brothers who recently lost their parents, they live in a small town that has recently been plagued by a rash of unexplained deaths. They become suspicious of a local mortician (the Tall Man) who is totally creepy but might be up to more sinister things than just looking like a weirdo. While chilling in the graveyard, Mike witnesses him stuffing a coffin into the back of his hearse and peeling out. He relays this to Jody…

    30 Spooky Halloween Questions Tag!

I was flipping through the calendar and realized that Thanksgiving is next month, I mean, obviously but then I realized that Halloween will be here and gone in a week.  Sad face. In celebration or lament, I am doing another Halloween tag, this one is a little spookier and much longer – I apologize in advance 😛 The theme song from Halloween, it’s my year-round ringtone. John Carpenter actually wrote the music for many of his films which I think is incredible, not only did he create some of the most notable horror flicks, he wrote some pretty creepy music. Fun fact, when my phone goes off my cats flip out…

31 Nights of Horror – The Exorcist

Have you been sleeping too much? Need something to keep you up at night? This is the movie for you. This movie, what a classic. The Exorcist is about a young girl, Regan who lives with her starlet mother, Chris who is just wrapping up her most recent film. Regan starts to exhibit strange and violent behaviour which leads to a whole host of medical testing that never seem to pinpoint what is the matter with her. The medical testing bits are actually harder for me to watch than the body horror, there is this scene where a doctor is putting an IV in her neck and blood is squirting everywhere…
